A Word from Laura: Armistice Day

Western Friends,

This Sunday coincides with Armistice Day – now Veterans' Day – when we will remember the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I, the “war to end all wars.”  The word “armistice” literally means “arms stand still,” referring to the cessation of fighting.

As we prepare to remember and honor those who have served our country, we also recognize the need for a new kind of armistice, for a cessation of senseless gun violence.  Our hearts have stopped too many times this year for those who have died needlessly, including those who have been well-trained to use arms, but found themselves at the wrong end of a gun.

This year, as we prepare to welcome new congressional representatives, may we also honor those who have served our nation’s military by enacting sensible gun legislation.  May we recognize the danger involved every time someone picks up a weapon, for noble purposes or out of ill will, and may we work to honor the old gospel song of studying war no more.

Giving thanks for all of you who serve our nation, with hope for a new armistice,
