A Word from Dean: Being Connected is a Blessing
Dear Friends,
The power of our Presbyterian connectional system was experienced at last Tuesday night’s Session Meeting. National Capital Presbytery’s General Presbyter and Western’s friend, Rev. John Molina-Moore, joined by Zoom to discuss how other congregations in this area are planning for sustainability into the future. I believe you’ll be reading some of what he shared elsewhere in this newsletter.
John told us that assisting churches envision new ways to use their buildings in ministry is the Presbytery’s #2 most important objective. In response to that, he was asked, “What is the #1 priority?”
John’s reply was “pastors.”
It was surprising to learn that due to a tidal wave of retirements, few graduating seminarians entering the pastoral ministry, and pastors leaving the ministry for another vocation or staying in place for a longer time, there is a severe shortage of clergy. John told us that churches are getting far fewer applicants for open positions than they used to – even if they are thriving congregations. Many churches in NCP are having difficulty filling vacancies. The DMV, of course, is an especially challenging area for relocations due to its high cost of living.
John’s shared insights and expertise, and learning about the resources available from the Presbytery, gave the Session real encouragement and support. Western Presbyterian Church is not alone or without knowledgeable assistance as we plan for years ahead. Being connected is a blessing; thanks be to God!
Grace and peace,
Dean
