WPC Anti-Racism Group: Jan 7
On Jan 7 at 7pm, the Western Presbyterian anti-racism group will hold its monthly meeting with special guest speaker Christy Lopez, a professor at Georgetown Law, co-leader of the school’s Innovative Policing Program, and Washington Post contributing columnist. Her bio is here: https://www.law.georgetown.edu/faculty/christy-e-lopez.
Professor Lopez was the DOJ lead attorney in its investigation of the Ferguson Police Department and has years of experience working on police reform efforts. The Georgetown program on innovative policing includes a Police for Tomorrow fellowship that recognizes the critical importance of police inclusion in efforts to change culture and address long-standing patterns and practices. “Defund the police” means a lot more than cutting police funding, as Professor Lopez describes in a Post article from June 2020, linked here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/06/07/defund-police-heres-what-that-really-means/%3foutputType=amp
This is a special opportunity to hear from and engage in conversation with a nationally-renowned expert on the topic of police reform.
