A Word from Dean: Encouragement and Support

Dear Friends,

My husband, Jim, and I first moved to D.C. in 1990 when he started a Ph.D. program at AU in International Relations, and I became the Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. Our kids were in middle school and grade school. Ancient history!

I’m telling you this because during those early years in D.C. we became familiar with Western Presbyterian’s ministry. I vaguely recall attending a rally at the church with Jesse Jackson.

Tangentially, our son, Matthew, had Mrs. Wimberly for English class at Wilson High School. She was one of his two favorite teachers and awakened him to a love of reading.

I also remember when your building was brand new and attending Presbytery events here. There was a lot of “church property envy” amongst NCP ministers!

And I volunteered at Miriam’s Kitchen way back when as it was a much simpler operation. Breakfast was the main, or even the only, meal. Chevy Chase had some regular helpers participating during that time.

So, to be with you for the summer feels familiar in a way. I certainly feel connected to your rich history. More importantly, I want to bring you encouragement and support this summer as you move forward into a very different world than way back in the 1990s and early 2000s. You are rich in talented and dedicated members who care both about the world and within the congregation. God has good things in store for you!

It is a gift for me to be with you in worshipping God and in service. Thank you for welcoming me.

Grace and peace,

Dean
