A Word from Laura: Unity in a Partisan World

Some aspects of church will always seem weird to the rest of the world, but this week one in particular stands out. 

As partisan influence seeps into the proceedings of this week’s impeachment trial, it can be hard to imagine a community in DC that tries to find a deeper unity, yet at our best, that’s what church is about. Finding a deeper unity in all of our human differences, celebrating our distinctions as manifestations of one God – that’s why we are church.

That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though.

This week we’ll hear from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, people whom he addressed as his own family. He has heard that they were dividing into camps, lining up based on the leaders they preferred, and so he calls on them to remember, not that they are all the same, but that they call the same Jesus their leader. 

As voters begin lining up behind our preferred presidential candidates these days, Paul’s words sound prescient.

We need his words about unity now as much as ever in our lives, our church, and our world.

Don’t miss this Sunday as we explore the deeper unity to which we are all called. We’ll also hold our annual meeting when we hear from some of our leaders, as well as give thanks for Kathryn Urban and her service as Sunday School coordinator.

As we get ready for this Sunday, I once saw a church sign that said “Unity doesn’t happen without U.”  [There’s a reason church humor rarely makes it to prime time.]  Corny, but true.  Our deeper unity in God needs the participation of everyone, and that means you!  May it be so!  I hope to see you soon.
