Ordaining Hope

This Sunday in worship we will ordain and install newly elected church officers. It is among my favorite practices of church life, as together leaders promise to serve the people of God using the gifts that God has given.

We promise to lead with “energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.” 

I love that promise! I have a t-shirt emblazoned with the key words of that vow. At our best, that promise shapes not only how ordained leaders take up their several callings, but also how the community of faith responds to that leadership. We not only lead with those commitments, but we follow with them, as well.
