Western's Negro Spiritual Fund Honors Black History Month
As part of our celebration of Black History Month, we will be singing and/or performing a Negro Spiritual every week during our Sunday worship. Recognizing that none of the composers of Negro Spirituals ever received compensation for their performances, Western joined other churches last year and established the Negro Spirituals Fund to “pay it forward” by making gifts to organizations performing this type of music. Each time we sing or perform a Negro Spiritual during our service, we are making a contribution to an African American organization, preferably one that supports the performance, education and/or distribution of this style of music.
The Negro Spirituals Project Committee has selected four organizations to receive our gifts in February: The Ben Holt Memorial Chapter of the National Association of Negro Musicians (Washington, DC), and the music programs or performing choral groups at three Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Howard University (DC), the University of DC, and Stillman College (AL). We are grateful to the members and friends of Western who have made gifts to this program.
