A Word from Dean
Dear Western Friends,
It seems to me that there are many fewer angels and nativity scenes decorating houses and yards this season. The usual churches have creches on their lawns, but they are uncommon among neighborhood houses. Have you noticed that, too? The Grinch Who Stole Christmas balloons and cut-outs seem very popular, and I’ve even seen a huge, left-over Halloween skeleton donning a Christmas cap.
I like the Grinch as much as anyone; don’t get me wrong. His is a good story for folks of all ages. But I do miss the displays of trumpeting, flying angels and the lighted outlines of a stable, manger and surrounding people and animals that remind us of the story of Jesus’ birth.
Another thing I’ve observed driving back and forth to work, are the Israeli flags now recently in abundance on the Israeli Embassy and on a few houses. Of course, we’ve seen the Ukrainian flags for some time now. But the blue and white Israeli flags are a new sighting. These flags remind us of horrendous wars; they fly before us even as we pray desperately for peace.
What we decorate on the outside of our homes and churches sends a message. Some are playful, some are reverent, and some are political. Some invite, some repel.
I hope Western’s pretty plaza tree sends a message of cheer and welcome, as do the posters on our outside signboard. How might we, in 2024, think of other ways to convey our faith and warm hospitality to our neighbors?
Blessings,
The Rev. Dr. Dean McDonald,
