A Word From David
This Sunday: Messy Church!
This Sunday we’ll gather for worship and brunch in the dining room of Miriam’s Kitchen. Worship, meal, communion, and conversation will all unfold around tables, and while we will follow a recognizable order of worship the service will be far from Western’s typical Sunday morning.
My favorite New Testament Greek word is liturgy. It comes from two words meaning people and work, and translates literally as the work of the people. Liturgy is not the job of church staff, it is the work of the people. Sunday’s worship will reflect that truth. We will create pieces of worship together in real time, and together proclaim scripture and share sacrament.
This Sunday is also World Communion Sunday, and we will remember the global church as we gather.
It will not be neat and tidy. For one thing, the MK dining room looks like a place that offers meals and case-management services to hundreds of people every day.
On the other hand, some of the most powerful worship experiences I have been privileged to be part of have been pretty messy.
There will also be some physical labor involved in cleaning up the space, resetting it for MK’s Monday meals, and returning various AV and music equipment upstairs. All hands are welcome and appreciated.
